چکیده

A great challenge of city planners is to provide efficient and effective connection service to travelers using public transportation system. This is commonly known as the last-mile problem and is critical in promoting the utilization of public transportation system. In this paper, we address the last-mile problem by considering a dynamic and demandresponsive mechanism for arranging ride sharing on a nondedicated commercial fleet (such as taxis or passenger vans). Our approach has the benefits of being dynamic, flexible, and with low setup cost. A critical issue in such ride-sharing service is how riders should be grouped and serviced, and how fares should be split. We propose two auction designs which are used to solicit individual rider’s willing payment rate and compensation rate (for extra travel, if any). We demonstrate that these two auctions are budget balanced, individually rational, and incentive compatible. A series of experimental studies based on both synthetic and real-world datasets are designed to demonstrate the pros and cons of our two proposed auction mechanisms in various settings.

Solving the Ride-Sharing Problem with Non-Homogeneous Vehicles by Using an Improved Genetic Algorithm with Innovative Mutation Operators and Local Search Methods

An increase in the number of vehicles in cities leads to several problems, including air pollution, noise pollution, and congestion. To overcome these problems, we need to use new urban management methods, such as using intelligent transportation systems like ride-sharing systems. The purpose of this study is to create and implement an improved genetic algorithms model for ride-sharing with non...

Analyzing the Dynamic Ride-sharing Potential for Shared Autonomous Vehicle Fleets Using Cellphone Data from Orlando, Florida

Transportation network companies (TNCs) are regularly demonstrating the economic and operational viability of dynamic ride-sharing (DRS) to any destination within a city (e.g., uberPOOL or Lyft Line), thanks to real-time information from smartphones. In the foreseeable future, fleets of shared automated vehicles (SAVs) may largely eliminate the need for human drivers, while lowering per-mile op...

Transaction / Regular Paper Title

We proposed and developed a taxi-sharing system that accepts taxi passengers’ real-time ride requests sent from smartphones and schedules proper taxis to pick up them via ridesharing, subject to time, capacity, and monetary constraints. The monetary constraints provide incentives for both passengers and taxi drivers: passengers will not pay more compared with no ridesharing and get compensated ...

Characterizing online cost-sharing mechanisms fordemand responsive transport systems

Demand-responsive transport systems use shuttles to provide door-to-door shared-rides for its passengers. The operating cost of the shuttles depends on the pick-up and drop-off locations of the passengers. It is challenging to design a fair cost-sharing mechanism that offers fare quotes to potential passengers without having any knowledge of future ride requests since different passengers cause...

Approximating the Performance of a "Last Mile" Transportation System

The Last Mile Problem (LMP) refers to the provision of travel service from the nearest public transportation node to a home or office. We study the supply side of this problem in a stochastic setting, with batch demands resulting from the arrival of groups of passengers who request last-mile service at urban rail stations or bus stops. Closedform approximations are derived for the performance o...
